Human Beings are created to protect all living creatures

I like this letter that was published in the online ST Forum, but what I like even more was the comment about what Morgan Freeman had said on a National Geographic wildlife programme.

Why is there no caning for animal abusers?

I WOULD like to know why the penalty for vandalism - which is basically malicious - and illegal defacement/destruction of non-living, non-feeling objects in Singapore carries the punishment of caning but the same dosen't apply to animals which have been abused?

Anyone who has been to the SPCA can see for themselves and hear horror stories about how abused animals (especially strays) have suffered and while they certainly cannot complain, they do bear their wounds quietly, if not painfully.

Why are people who practise such cruelty allowed to get away with nothing more than a fine, a week's jail or what is simply nothing more than a slap on the wrist? No wonder reports of animal abuse still persist due to lack of strong deterrence.

#1 : I recall watching Mr. Morgan Freeman speaking on a short but powerful National Geographic film on Wildlife and animals. He highlighted the importance of all organisms and wildlife in general afterwhich he questions the audience on the existence of Human Beings. Guess what? The significance of human beings to the Primary Food Chain is minute, almost non-existent. He ended the film by telling audiences that Human Beings are created by mother nature to protect all living creatures who cannot speak or defend for themselves. We are not with our god-given limbs and the ability to communicate for nothing.

If we have to cane to let the offender know his/her mistake, so be it.
